How one couple returned a historic river home and school to its former glory…

Most owners of old houses have pretty good "you-should've-seen-it-before" stories about the state of their homes, prior to renovations. But it's hard to top the pre-renovation saga of Louise and Stuart Newsomes' sandstone villa in South Nyack, known as Berachah Hall. The couple's home, now a showcase overlooking the Hudson, was nothing but a stone shell when they bought it in 2001. It had been abandoned 15 years earlier, after a horrific fire destroyed most of the interior. "The whole house came down," Louise says. "There were even trees growing in [it]."

Carolyn Ray Combines Art and Industry

"My longest collaboration has been with artist Louise Newsome who was a decorative painter,” Ray continues. “Louise created all the tools for the combination of techniques we used to hand paint our Landscape Panels, nine-foot-high panels inspired by old murky trompe l’oeil wall murals. My very newest intern, Julie Stephenson, is adept at digital CAD work and spent several months photographing my artifacts, which we then put directly into a repeat.”
